“The return of Stewart and Tafazolli definitely helped at the start of March, and when the team is keeping clean sheets, it tends to help,” George from The Wycombe Way tells FansBet.

“Our forward players are finding their best form of the season too and our midfield duo of Lewis Wing and Josh Scowen are top operators in the third tier.

“Sam Vokes is enjoying his football as much as he has at any point in his career, and every week he plays with a smile on his face and is one of the complete forwards in the division.”

Wycombe sat top of League One following a 2-0 victory over Oxford at Adams Park back on January 15th.

The Chairboys leapfrogged previous leaders Rotherham and Sunderland in the table after both sides dropped points, with hopes of an immediate return to the Championship growing.

But a miserable run soon followed – Wycombe picked up three points from a possible 21 across a six-week period – with the side dropping out of the automatic promotion places and below the play-off spots altogether.

“At the start of 2022 we were playing some of our best football in recent times,” explains George.

“The win over Oxford in the middle of January was sensational, and one that saw us sitting at the top of the tree.

“Following that, we had no wins in seven and it wasn’t as if we were playing poorly, we just couldn’t stick the ball in the net.

“Pair that with both of our centre-backs missing and we weren’t firing at all – a few draws thrown in and we really lost ground on the teams above us who were all hitting incredible form.

“I think it shows how good our early form was; that amid our awful run of form, we only dropped as low as eighth, as most teams were unbeaten through February.”

The recent run has not only boosted morale among players and fans alike at Adams Park, but it also means Wycombe’s promotion bid is firmly back on the cards.

Wanderers have a two-point cushion on seventh place, Sunderland, though have played a game more than the Black Cats, and are now 10 points off MK Dons, who currently occupy the second automatic promotion place.

So with games to come against fellow promotion hopefuls Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield Wednesday, not to mention struggling Wimbledon and Gillingham, how does George see the remainder of the season panning out?

“I’m backing us to win all of the next five,” he says.

“We’ve got two away trips to teams battling against the drop, and although Plymouth and Wednesday will be two difficult fixtures, I expect our home advantage to have a huge impact.

“We’ve been in fine form at both ends and there’s been little in the way of long-ball football this season, so we need to keep that up if we want to finish the season in the top six.

“As long as we keep our key players fit, focus on each game as it comes, and don’t worry about the teams around us, just concentrate on what we can do for ourselves – that can be achieved.

“I see Wigan winning the league, with MK Dons to go up in second and ourselves Rotherham, Plymouth and Oxford making the play-offs while Sunderland and Wednesday miss out.

“If I had to call it, I’d back us for another Wembley win, beating Rotherham in the final.”
