A London Derby Thriller
It looks set to be a thriller at the London Stadium this Saturday lunchtime for the neutral fan – both teams have an abundance of quality going forwards, but their defenses look anything but water- tight.
West Ham have been on a decent recent run in the league and it is clear to see that Manuel Pellegrini has a talented squad at his disposal with five wins from their last eight outings.
However, they’ve thrown in the odd poor performance at times as 2-0 defeats against both Watford and Burnley demonstrated.
West Ham Capable Of Scoring
Those fixtures certainly seem to be anomalies though, in so far as the Hammers have netted in 11 of their last 14 fixtures across all competitions, with the other exception coming against the Man City.
They’ve netted at least twice in four of their last five in front of their own fans, while in the league alone, five of their last six at the London Stadium have seen a minimum of four strikes.
They appear more than capable of racking up further goals with the likes of Marko Arnautovic and Felipe Anderson in their side, and indeed five of their seven encounters with ‘Big Six’ outfits in all competitions under Pellegrini have seen Over 3.5 Goals land.
Arsenal Struggled On The Road
For all those that thought Arsenal’s struggles on the road may be over, it has looked short lived as they have gone W4-D3-L3 so far as they’re without a win in four.
Those victories came against Cardiff, Newcastle, Fulham and Bournemouth – all of whom reside in the bottom half of the table – and while the Cherries only lie in 12th, they played the Gunners during their current run of 10 defeats from 13 outings across all competitions.
There’s no doubt that Unai Emery’s men will better their points on the road from last term, as they’re just one behind that tally already, and much of the Gunner’s improvement has come from their improved output as they netted more than once on just two occasions on their travels last term, compared to eight of their 10 trips this time around.
Defence Remains A Concern For Arsenal
Unfortunately for Arsenal, their defensive concerns are as prevalent as ever as they’ve conceded at least twice in six of their 10 away fixtures this term, with Liverpool putting five past them in their latest road trip. As a result, there have been more than three goals in seven of those matches, while across all venues it’s landed in six of their last eight.
West Ham v Arsenal Head-To-Head
If the head-to-heads are anything to go by in this fixture then we certainly want to have a goalscorer on our side, with four of their six league meetings since April 2016 seeing at least four strikes.
It was Arnautovic that bullied Emery’s charges at the Emirates earlier this term as he got on the scoresheet in the process, meaning he’s now scored in both his last two matches against them.
He may have come off after just 20 minutes in their FA Cup triumph over Birmingham, but he still had time to open the scoring, leaving him with three goals in 110 minutes of action on home turf since returning from injury.
That substitution caused a stir but it was a precautionary measure, so he’ll be fully rested and ready to run this Arsenal defense ragged again.
