To help you along the way, we have given you a little more information about this one-off event which takes place at 17:15 (BST) and is being broadcast live on ITV.
About the race
Tiger Roll had been due to seek an unprecedented third consecutive win in the big race before it was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic and the government’s advice on social distancing and mass gatherings.
But forty runners who would have been most likely to line up will still take part, using CGI technology and special algorithms meaning there will be racing of some kind from Aintree this weekend after all.
Makers Inspired Entertainment use computer-generated imagery (CGI), to accurately recreate Aintree’s Grand National course, complete with spruce-topped fences and signature jumps such as Becher’s Brook and The Chair.
Inspired form information for the 40 runners and riders deemed most likely to contest this year’s edition is fed into algorithms which then simulate the running and results of the race.
Where to watch
The Virtual Grand National will be broadcast by ITV at 5pm (BST) on Saturday, April 4 and can also be streamed online using the ITV Hub.
The show will also feature a ‘Grand National Race of Champions’ featuring legendary winners of the race from bygone years, such as Red Rum and Tiger Roll, who will battle against each other, and 38 others in a separate computer simulation.
Executive producer Rob McLoughlin said: “We use the latest CGI technology and algorithms and were ready to go ahead as a forerunner to the big race, but now we want to cheer the nation up and ask the computer if history could have been made.”
How to play
Simply answer the two specific Virtual Grand National questions with a chance to win the jackpot and to make things a little more straight forward, we’ve given you some multiple choice answers for each.
Who will win the Virtual Grand National?
Picking the winner in this epic steeplechase is not an easy task at the best of times and the virtual version is sure to prove just as tough.
Tiger Roll was looking to make it a hat-trick of victories and make history at Aintree on Saturday, not surprisingly making him the clear favourite for the race, but as we know, anything can happen over these famous fences.
So to make things a little easier, we’ve divided the 40 runners into groups, meaning that all you have to do is choose the group you think the winner will come from.
What will be the total number of horses to complete the Virtual Grand National 2020?
Anyone who has watched the Grand National will know just how gruelling this race is as the 40 entrants race over four miles and have to navigate 16 fences on two circuits of the famous track.
Last year saw 19 horses complete the race in total and in 2018 30 made it to the finish line, that’s almost three-quarters of all the runners and riders who took part.
We don’t expect you to name the exact number that will finish the 2020 Virtual Grand National, so once again we’ve given you a number of options to choose from to make it a little easier – though, as we all know, nothing is simple when it comes to the Grand National, virtual or otherwise!
