What Happened Last Week

As always, the match play week was filled with excitement the first few days, some of the highlights were:

  • Tiger being 1 down on the 11th tee against ball striking maestro Patrick Cantlay only to win 5 of the next 6 holes including a hole out from 82 yards on the 13th followed by a vintage Tiger fist pump to ultimately win the match and advance.

  • Francesco Molinari continuing his excellent match play form by going 3-0-0 without trailing for a single hole in the round robin.

  • A round of 16 generational match between Tiger and Rory which showed that its still life in the old cat as he got the better of the Northern Irishman and advanced to the quarter finals.

Unsurprisingly the Sunday was anticlimactic and not just because Molinari couldn’t bring home a winning ticket (I promise) for me. Its difficult to create compelling TV with just 4 golfers left, especially when all the biggest names have been knocked out. Anyway, congratulations to Kevin Kisner on the biggest win of his career after I had backed him the previous two weeks (No, I`m not bitter at all).

Valero Texas Open

The TOUR makes the short trip from Austin to just north of San Antonio and TPC San Antonio (The AT&T Oaks Course) for the last preliminary tournament before the Masters next week.

This tournament has usually been played towards the end of April, but the revamping of the schedule means that it`s now squeezed in between the WGC Match Play and the Master which leads to maybe the weakest field this side of the new year.

So, what kind of course is TPC San Antonio? Well its one of the longest and toughest on TOUR, with an average winning score of -11,44 over the 9 years it’s been hosted here. Even last year when Andrew Landry set a new tournament record (-17) the course still ranked as the 12th most difficult. 3 of the 4 par 3s are over 200 yards. It has some of the most demanding set of par 5s with 2 of them usually playing over par(!) and really just the one(18th) giving up any eagles. In fact, the two semi drivable par 4s gives up more eagles than the other 3. The rough is basically non existing so it will be a week where it will be better to be long than straight. As always you rather be both, but we can`t all be Rory or Dustin now can we.

Valero Texas Open Betting Tips

Jason Kokrak

If you told me a year ago that I would be backing Mr Kokrak at 28s I would not have believed you, but numbers don’t lie. The 33-year-old has top 10s in 3 of his last 4 starts. Only a sloppy 3 putt on the 18th made him miss a playoff against Paul Casey at Valspar last time out. He is 1st in strokes gained approach, 27th in driving distance and 8th in Par 3s between 200-225 yards. As an added incentive a win here is his last chance of getting in the Masters next week.

Sungjae Im

Once again, I’m going back to my favourite Korean rookie and why wouldn’t you. His last 4 tournaments read; 3rd, MC, 4th and 7th. In my opinion we are looking at a future top 10 player in the world and hopefully as with Bryson DeChambeau last year the bookies won’t catch up until we have cashed a couple of winning tickets from the youngsters’ impressive play. As with Kokrak he needs a win to get a chance to play in his first Masters.

J.B Holmes

I might not stand his extreme slow pace of play, but when you give me over 50 to 1 on a guy who won under two months ago (Genesis Open), has 3 top 20s in his last 6 starts at this course and on top of that went 2-1-0 after beating John Rahm last week at the Match Play you get my money.
