Serbia v Montenegro
Serbia demonstrated at the World Cup that they’re no pushovers as they beat Costa Rica, only lost narrowly to Switzerland as their opponents scored a last gasp winner, while they were respectable in defeat to Brazil. Indeed, they were always favourites for promotion into League B with the array of talent at Mladen Krstajic’s disposal, and even if Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is absent from the squad, they still have the likes of Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ajax’s Dusan Tadic, Man Utd’s Nemanja Matic and Roma’s Aleksandar Kolarov. They won the reverse of this fixture 2-0 during the last international break, while they remain unbeaten as they lead Group C4 with the meanest defence as they’ve kept clean sheets in three of their four games.
Montenegro are in second place courtesy of maximum points over minnows Lithuania and a stalemate with Romania, with every goal they’ve netted coming versus the former. In fact, excluding those two encounters with Lithuania, Montenegro are without a successful effort in four outings. Meanwhile, Serbia have won six of nine unbeaten games on home turf since May 2016, even leading at the break in five of these wins, and you sense that it will only take one goal for them to take all three points. Not to mention the visitors are still without Monaco’s Stevan Jovetic and Atletico Madrid’s Stefan Savic.

Turkey v Sweden
Sweden have struggled since making the World Cup quarter finals and find themselves bottom of Group B2 with just one point from two games. They need to win both their remaining matches to top the group and at least one to avoid relegation, meaning they’ll have to be more proactive than they’re used to under Janne Andersson. They’ve netted just four goals across their last six matches and have drawn a blank in half of their last 12 matches, and lack the creative tools to play on the foot front, with their height at set-pieces their redeeming feature.
Turkey can’t catch Russia and only need a point to send Sweden down, but in Italian based duo Cengiz Under (Roma) and Hakan Calhanoglu (Milan), they have the wide players with the necessary incision to hurt the visitors. The Turks are an impressive W12-D5-L3 on home turf from their 20 matches since November 2014. Meanwhile, Sweden are W1-D2-L4 on the road since August 2017, with that sole win over a hapless Belarus, while they even failed to score in the last five of these.

Italy v Portugal
Italy have picked up four points from two games against Poland and were downed 1-0 in Portugal, but there were signs of improvement on display in their last match as they won in Chorzow by the same scoreline. It may have taken a stoppage-time winner to complete the job, but they had wasted a plethora of chances as they dominated throughout and the increased creativity will have had Roberto Mancini purring. The result can hand the Azzurri belief and on home turf, they’ll fancy their chances against the Portuguese.
Italy have only lost in front of their own fans just once in 30 matches since September 2013 (W15-D14-L1), and though they’ve drawn the last five of these, Portugal may struggle to create much for Andre Silva up top, who could be a lonely and isolated man by the end of the evening up against Giorgio Chiellini. Ronaldo misses out once more, and though Portugal have two wins from two without him so far, he’s a potent counter-attacking weapon and will be missed as the Italians are forced to take the initiative.
The hosts are completely safe from relegation unless a Poland side in poor form can beat Portugal away in Guimaraes on Tuesday, but they have to win here if they want to progress. Mancini has included Ciro Immobile despite a public falling out recently, with the Napoli striker and other key attacking weapon Lorenzo Insigne scoring a combined 15 league goals already this term. They should have the firepower to beat Portugal, whose negativity in playing for the draw should be exposed.
