The Rab Havlin Blog

Newmarket's three day Craven Meeting is upon us & FansBet ambassador Rab Havlin provides his insight for the opening day.

I’ll kick off this week with a quick glance backwards, reflecting on the impressive display of Mohaather in Saturday’s Greenham Stakes at Newbury.

The way he quickened up impressed me, and I’d expect him to to head to the Guineas as a live contender.

Looking ahead, one who could also be Guineas bound is Azano, who runs for the boss, John Gosden, in Tuesday’s European Free Handicap (2.25pm) at the Craven Meeting.

The face he doesn’t have to carry top weight is a bonus, and you’d have to say his second placed effort behind Mohaather at the end of last season is the pick of the form in the race.

On that evidence you’d have to be hoping he carries a strong chance and will run very well under Frankie Dettori.

My first ride of the day comes on Angel’s Hideaway in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes, run over seven furlongs at 3.35pm.

I won a Group 3 on her at Ascot last July and she’s smart.

I was also on her when she went down three parts of a length to Mot Juste, who re-opposes here, in the Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket in October.

Again I wouldn’t expect there to be a lot between them, but my filly has done well and strengthened up over the winter, and if she can see the trip out well and finish strongly, this could be the launchpad for a tilt at the 1,000 Guineas.

My other ride on Tuesday is the Amanda Perrett-trained Lavender’s Blue in the mile fillies’ maiden (4.45pm).

I’d be lying if I said I know a lot about this daughter of Sea The Stars, but when a trainer who is as good a judge as this brings one to a race of this nature first time out, it’s reasonable to expect a decent prospect, and I’m hoping she’ll have a pleasing and educational debut.
