Sir Kenny Dalglish believes there’s plenty more to look forward to when it comes to the fascinating rivalry that’s developing between Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola.

Liverpool finished on 92 points, one behind eventual champions Manchester City after a thrilling final day of the season as the pair split all the domestic trophies available to them this campaign.

Having once trailed City by 14 points, Liverpool went on a 19-game unbeaten run to end the season, with 10 wins on the spin from January to April helping them close the gap.

A draw at City in April and at home to Spurs in May ultimately saw them fall short, however, with a final-day victory over Wolves not enough to win a second Premier League title with that accolade going to Pep and his City side for the fourth time in five seasons.

Having beaten Chelsea at Wembley on penalties to win the Carabao Cup back in February, Liverpool once again overcame the Blues on spot-kicks to clinch their first FA Cup since 2006 and keep alive their hopes of an unprecedented quadruple heading into the final week of the season.

It’s been almost six years since Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp first met in a Premier League technical area and in that time they have built a rivalry that may become one of the finest English football has seen.

Since arriving at the Etihad, Guardiola has bagged nine major honours after his side made it four titles in fives season this year.

After a trophyless first season, Guardiola got his hands on his first silverware at City with a 3-0 win over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final. They went on to win the league title in style with a record 100 points in 2017/18.

The following season City edged out Liverpool by 98 points to 97 in a thrilling title race and again won the Carabao Cup by beating Chelsea on penalties and thrashed Watford 6-0 in the FA Cup final to become the first side to win the domestic treble.

A Carabao Cup victory in 2020 was followed by a Premier League and League Cup double in 2021 before they pipped Liverpool again by just one point on the final day of the 2021/22 campaign to lift another title.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp has revitalised Liverpool Football Club since he took the helm in 2015 and under his management, the club has advanced from a side languishing in and around the Europa League places to one of the best and most consistent performers in Europe.

In his seven-year spell with the Merseyside club, Klopp has won five trophies including the league title in the 2019/20 season and the Champions League in 2019.

The 54-year-old gaffer has already earned plaudits for his tactical acumen and the backing he offers to his players, but above all else, he brings unrivalled energy to the table.

“I think Jurgen is a perfect fit for Liverpool Football Club and I think Pep is a perfect fit for Manchester City as well,” explains Dalglish, who joined Liverpool in 1977 – winning five league titles, two European Cups and four League Cups at Anfield before lifting the Premier League title with Blackburn Rovers in 1995.

“I would think the only thing that’s chipping away at Pep is the fact that he’s not won the Champions League yet with City so maybe he’ll try and put that right next season.

“The two of them are a fantastic compliment to the Premier League, the quality that they have is exceptional and the Premier League should be proud to have them.

“They are two British teams, two excellent teams, and two really entertaining teams and I don’t think we’ll be getting fed up with it anytime soon, will we?”
