AC Milan v Juventus
Milan might have won five of their last six league games, but it’s noticeable the exception came in the derby as they still struggle when playing the better teams. They’ve also lost to Napoli this season, as well as all three encounters with Juve last term as Massimiliano Allegri’s side won by a 9-1 scoreline on aggregate. They also have a mounting injury list to contend with – in particular the race to be fit for Gonzalo Higuain and the absence of defensive shield Lucas Biglia – which poses problems ahead of the visit of Juve.
The Old Lady may have suffered a shock reverse late on hosting Man Utd, but prior to that they’d won 13 of 14 unbeaten games including all seven on their travels. In fact, they’ve won 21 of 24 unbeaten away matches since a 3-2 loss to Sampdoria last November, including wins over Napoli, Lazio, Spurs, Real Madrid, Inter and Man Utd. They’re not used to losing and we can expect a reaction from them here.
Sassuolo v Lazio
Sassuolo picked up their first win in five last time out, but it came over rock-bottom Chievo and they have much convincing to do. Since an opening day shock win over Inter, they’ve lost games against Juve, Milan and Napoli by an aggregate scoreline of 8-2. Meanwhile, they’ve lost each of their four encounters with Lazio since Simone Inzaghi took over the reins for the visitors, as their two head-to-heads last term produced a combined score of 9-1.
Lazio have lost four games so far this term, but these came against the current top three and Roma as they’ve won their other seven matches to date. That leaves them with a dismal W2-D2-L9 record against last season’s top six and the current top six this term, but against the rest of the division that becomes W26-D7-L3 and a fantastic W14-D3-L1 on their travels – with that sole defeat the one at Roma this term. They even netted an average of exactly 2.5 goals per game across these road trips and in fact, since the start of last season, Lazio have picked up more points and scored a greater number of goals on their travels than in designated home fixtures despite playing a game fewer.
Roma v Sampdoria
Following their worst start to a season in years, Roma have since recovered to go W6-D2-L1 over their last nine fixtures across all competitions, though they can’t let up as they’re already five points off Milan and Lazio in 4th and 5th respectively. Fortunately for them, Sampdoria’s recent form has taken a dip as they’ve taken one point from their last three, conceding seven times across their most recent two games as they suffered defeats against Milan and Torino.
Roma have now actually won four of their last five at home including a 3-1 win over Lazio, with the 2-0 defeat to SPAL appearing a blip as they netted 15 times across the other four games. That has to be encouraging given the way in which Sampdoria have shipped goals over their last two games, especially after Edin Dzeko has netted five times in three home games across all competitions. Roma may have drawn their last two league games but these came on the road at Napoli and Fiorentina, so the hosts should feel confident back at the Stadio Olimpico.
