Mothwerwell v Aberdeen
Motherwell had appeared to overcome a dire spell of form with successive victories over the bottom two, St. Mirren and Dundee, though they were subsequently annihilated 7-1 at Ibrox by Rangers prior to the international break. A first half red card for Carl McHugh certainly didn’t help, but the result leaves them with five defeats in a row when facing top-half sides, while stretching back into last season they’ve lost 12 of 16 winless games against such teams since December 2017.
Following a slow start to the season where they won just once across their opening five, Aberdeen have since picked up steam with five victories from their last seven outings, including all their last three. The two exceptions were both defeats by just the single goal, with these coming against current the top two Celtic and Hearts. Meanwhile, they’ve been remarkably consistent when facing bottom-half teams, going W20-D3-L1 since the start of last season. Having won six of seven league encounters with Motherwell since 2016/17, and six of eight on the road since 2014/15, it’s hard to look past Derek McInnes’ men.
Rangers, Hearts, Aberdeen make it all to play for in Scottish Premiership
Rangers v Livingstone
Livingston may have earned an impressive point in a goalless stalemate hosting Celtic, but they lost 1-0 in their previous two games against St. Johnstone and Hamilton and they’ve certainly struggled to find the net this season. Indeed, only the bottom three have registered fewer successful efforts this term, while their final-third struggles have been especially pronounced against the stronger teams as they’ve netted just two goals in six encounters with top-half outfits.
With that in mind, the Gers will be confident of taking maximum points once they get the breakthrough. Across all competitions, Steven Gerrard’s side have opened the scoring in six of their last seven matches in which there was at least one goal. Although they’ve only kept three clean sheets from their 12 league games this term, they’ve only conceded more than the solitary strike on the single occasion. They’ve won five of six unbeaten games at Ibrox by an aggregate score of 22-4, and so even if Livingston are able to find the net, they’re highly likely to be outscored in any case.
St Mirren v Hearts
St. Mirren kicked off their season with a win over Dundee, but they’ve since lost 10 of 12 winless matches as they’ve been truly abysmal. Although they did pick up a point in their last outing, this also came against the Dee, who are the only side abject enough to feature below them in the table. Indeed, they’re the joint-lowest scorers with just six goals from 13 games each, and while Dundee have shipped more goals, St. Mirren have still managed to concede an average of two per game this season.
Hearts have been knocked off their perch following consecutive defeats for the first time this season, but these came against top-four outfits Celtic and Kilmarnock, while their only other defeat this term came away at Rangers. Excluding results against the current top four they’ve won six of eight unbeaten games, with their three encounters with the bottom three yielding a combined score of 11-2 – including a 4-1 victory over St. Mirren earlier in the campaign. They only trail Celtic on goal difference and will be thankful for an easier assignment to help build up some momentum again in their quest to keep pace with the reigning champions.
