Dortmund look certain to finish 2018 at the top of the Bundesliga table after a remarkable opening 13-games that has seen them yet to be beaten. Contrasting fortunes for Schalke who are currently outside of the top 10 and a half of the table that they are certainly not accustomed to being in. Ruhr Derby Even In Recent Times
The Ruhr derby has been a fairly even contest in recent seasons as they’ve shared the spoils since 2014/15, going W2-D4-L2. However, Dortmund have returned to the kind of elite levels they achieved under the heydays of Jurgen Klopp this term, and despite second-placed finishes in 2012/13, 13/14 and 15/16 since their last Bundesliga title, they were still 25, 19 and 10 points off Bayern respectively in those attempts.
BVB have required extra-time to produce wins in both DFP Pokal matches they’ve played this season, but those games featured heavily rotated sides and in the Champions League and Bundesliga alone, they’ve gone W13-D4-L1 so far, with that sole blemish a 2-0 defeat at the Wanda Metropolitano. To put that defeat in perspective though, Atletico Madrid are W25-D9-L2 in La Liga and European competition since they moved into their new home for the start of last season.
Dortmund In Title Winning Form
The stunning 4-0 triumph over Diego Simeone’s men in the reverse fixture is more emblematic of the stellar campaign Dortmund are enjoying. Domestically, there’s been no stopping them of late as they’ve won eight of their last nine while netting an average of 3.2 goals per game, though they also conceded 10 times across these outings as two thirds of them saw at least four goals in total.
Schalke have seen the same occur in two of their last four, but while these came against bottom-four outfits Hannover and Nurnberg as they won 3-1 and 5-2 respectively, there’s good reason to think it will be the case again.
Schalke v Dortmund Betting Tips
Conceding three times against those two is hardly all that impressive, while fifth-placed Frankfurt have put three past Schalke within their last four, so although they may well get a consolation strike against BVB they should be well out-gunned. Indeed, half of the last six head-to-head encounters have seen at least four strikes – including a sensational 4-4 term. However, given seven of Dortmund’s 10 league wins this term have produced Over 3.5 Goals, all signs point towards a cracker of a derby.
