Rab Havlin Blog: Newmarket July Meeting Preview – Day Two

Back for a second helping of the Newmarket July Meeting, elite rider & FansBet ambassador Rab Havlin takes a look at the big prizes on day two.

Expertly trained in Newmarket by Roger Varian, from a jockey’s perspective Bated Breath filly Daahyeh looks precisely the type you’d like to be on if you were given the choice in this afternoon’s Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes (2.25pm).

She impressed me when beating the re-opposing Raffle Prize on debut back at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile back in May, then built on that by winning Royal Ascot’s Albany Stakes with a bit to spare.

Powerful, unbeaten, a good mover, seemingly blessed with a great temperament and no issues handling the big occasion, she’s got lots going for her.

What’s more, as in the case of Raffle Prize who don’t forget went on to win the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, she’s either already beaten them herself, or beaten something which has gone on to get the better of today’s rivals.

For those reasons, it’s hard to look beyond Daahyeh.

Later in the afternoon, the July Meeting’s really big day two prize is the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes over a mile at 3.35pm.

This’ll surely be tight, but I think if my agent called me now and said he’d got me the leg-up on one of these six, I’d want it to be one of the William Haggas pair, One Master.

Back against her own sex now after a superb run when a length third behind Lord Glitters in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot, she’s tough, streetwise, and hails from a stable having stacks of winners.

My good mate Frankie Dettori will disagree as he’s on her stablemate Beshaayir, who finished ahead of One Master when the pair were first and fourth in a Group 2 at the Curragh in May, in a race that also featured the re-opposing I Can Fly in second.

However, I thought that was Frankie as his very best that day, kicking at the right time and nicking the race with a masterclass in the saddle.

It’ll be close, but I think One Master might get her revenge on this occasion in a race where the three year olds could just come up short.
