Michael Smith v Rob Cross

A tough match to call in this week’s opener. Rob Cross actually beat Michael Smith in the semis of the UK Open on Sunday, though Smith averaged higher, before Cross then threw a miserly 84.79 losing in the final. Over the last 12 months there is not a lot to separate them in the averages – 97.22 v 98.01 – with both players winning 68% of their matches. However, Cross leads their head-to-head 10-3, including both Premier League matches last season, so is favoured in a tie likely to be decided by narrow margins.

Daryl Gurney v James Wade

Daryl Gurney lost in the last 32 of the UK Open after being crushed 7-1 by Rob Cross last week, whilst James Wade beat Michael van Gerwen 7-3 in Exeter. It shows exactly where both players are at currently. Wade has been displaying the better consistency over the last year or so, winning 71% of his matches compared to Gurney’s 61%. This is a 50-50 match according to the odds, but Wade is the clear value.

Mensur Suljovic v Gerwyn Price

Mensur Suljovic lost in the last 32 of the UK Open, whilst Gerwyn Price continued his impressive rise making the semi-finals. Aside from Michael van Gerwen, Price is the only player throwing a three-figure average this year, and it’s no fluke across a spread of 37 matches. Suljovic’s on the other hand, is only 97.64 in-comparison and Price leads the head-to-head 9-4. The Welshman is the value whilst still being able to keep the draw onside.

Raymond van Barneveld v Peter Wright

It was more disappoint for RVB last week as he first lost to Michael Smith 7-4 while averaging less than 95, and then followed it up with an exit at the first hurdle of the UK Open to Simon Stevenson, again with a sub 95 average. Peter Wright was defeated by Mensur Suljovic in both competitions but there was absolutely no shame in his defeats, averaging first 97 and then a massive 106. We’ve previously banged on about Barney’s shortcomings and whilst the market continues to overrate him, it makes sense to continue to oppose him. Wright has won their last three meetings including, 7-2 in the Premier League last season.

Michael van Gerwen v John Henderson

Big John Henderson makes his Premier League debut here and whilst he’s not a Premier League standard player, he’s more than capable of raising his level to compete with the best. He pushed World Championship runner-up Michael Smith at the Ally Pally and actually beat MVG last time they met in the World Grand Prix. Van Gerwen has suffered consecutive losses, firstly to Wade 7-3 and then Mervyn King 10-6, to prove he is human after all. Again, he looks too short at 1.18 this week, and Henderson is more than capable of coving the +4.5 handicap, with just three legs required in front of his home crowd in Scotland. This bet would have only lost once in their nine meetings.
