France On The Brink

France need just a point to guarantee their place in next summers’ mini tournament, but the world champions cannot afford any complacency against a Dutch side that have improved considerably under Ronald Koeman. The hosts put group rivals Germany to the sword in Amsterdam last month as they ran out 3-0 winners, though two of those goals came late on to offer a flattering gloss to the eventual scoreline. They did also secure a draw with a strong Belgian line-up in Brussels last month too, meaning their loss in Paris back in September is their sole defeat in seven outings since losing to England in Koeman’s first game in charge.

Draw Secures League Status For The Netherlands

Although the Netherlands require victories against both France and Germany in the final two group stage games to secure top spot, a stalemate here would almost certainly see the Dutch maintain their League A status because of that head-to-head goal difference with Die Mannschaft. However, a defeat would leave Germany needing just the three points on the final day, rather than a massive win to overtake the Dutch and avoid the drop. Given a draw is satisfactory enough for France’s ambitions, that outcome would suit both teams just fine. Indeed, it’s highly unlikely that either set of fans would take issue with the Germans being relegated!

France Not At Their Best

The case for the stalemate grows stronger as Les Bleus certainly haven’t produced their absolute best since their triumph in Russia. Their goalless contest in Munich owed a lot of thanks to stand-in goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, while they needed a pair of late goals to secure a draw hosting Iceland during the last international break – despite the Nordic outfit suffering a streak of eight losses from 11 winless matches at present. The French have also seen Benjamin Mendy, Alexandre Lacazette, Paul Pogba and in-form Anthony Martial withdraw from the squad. However, they’re still unbeaten in 15 outings and have plenty of strength in depth, and so the prospect of a statement win for the hosts seems slightly outlandish still.

The Draw?

While France frequently tend to be involved in high-scoring affairs, rather unsurprisingly given the array of forward talent they possess, they still rarely produce 2-2 or 3-3 results. In fact, prior to their draw with Iceland and a friendly versus Germany in November 2017, the last time they produced a high-scoring stalemate came over a decade ago against Romania in October 2008. The Netherlands have however seen both teams find the net in five of their last six fixtures, drawing half of these, while each of their last seven that finished all-square have ended 1-1.

Goalscorers

There were high hopes for Memphis Depay following some excellent displays under Luis van Gaal at the 2014 World Cup, but his subsequent move to Old Trafford never saw him perform to the same level, with a move to Lyon necessary to kick-start his career. However, he’s since flourished in Ligue 1, where he’s even scored or assisted more goals than either Neymar or Kylian Mbappe since the start of 2018. He comes into this encounter fresh from a brace for Lyon on the road at Guingamp, while he’s actually either scored or set up 14 goals in 16 appearances for the national side since November 2016 – with seven goals in his last 11.
