Nations League: Your Friday night double

We preview two games from Friday night's UEFA Nations League fixtures.

Belgium v Switzerland, Friday 12th October, 19:45

These two both won their openers against Iceland without conceding, though it was surprisingly Switzerland who actually inflicted the greater misery on Erik Hamren’s side as they netted six times to Belgium’s three.

A point here could leave the Red Devils needing a win in the reverse fixture to prevent losing first place on head-to-head results or goal difference, with these two set to meet again in the final group game.

As impressive as it is to down a team that drew with Argentina at the World Cup and reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 by such a wide margin, Switzerland’s 6-0 win was reminiscent of another victory by the same scoreline versus Panama just prior to the World Cup.

They can certainly turn on the style for the odd occasion, but the Swiss struggle when travelling to the top European outfits.

They’ve lost three of five winless encounters with England (twice), France, Portugal and Spain since the start of qualification for Euro 2016, managing just the single goal of their own across these games.

Roberto Martinez should have too much at his disposal for the visitors as his charges have won 10 of their last 11 matches, with the exception their narrow 1-0 semi-final defeat to eventual World Cup champions France.

Six of these were without conceding, while on home turf they’ve won five of their last eight to nil.

Belgium’s assistant coach Thierry Henry and head coach Roberto Martinez will be expecting a win from their team.

Belgium to win to nil at 2.55*

Greece v Hungary, Friday 12th October, 19:45

With teams tied on points separated by head-to-head results come the end of the group stage, Greece are already up against it if they’re to stand a chance of finishing on top.

They trail leaders Finland by three points and though they’ve picked up a win over pointless Estonia, they also lost to Hungary in their last match and will need to overcome them here.

However, the Greeks aren’t the most adventurous of teams, as excluding wins over 198th and 86th ranked Gibraltar and Cyprus respectively, they’ve failed to score more than once in any of their last 15 outings.

Ten of those games saw fewer than three goals, including five of the last six, while seven saw just one goal or less.

Three of the four matches in Group C2 so far have finished 1-0 to one team or the other, and the correct score is worth a punt here.

The visitors have lost five of their last six winless road games, including 1-0 defeats in Andorra and Finland, and having also lost to Luxembourg during this period we’d have to side with the hosts.

Indeed, Greece were a tad unfortunate in the reverse fixture as they dominated possession (63%) and were made to pay for their poor finishing despite producing the better chances.

Greece’s Sokratis Papastathopoulos will want a win against Hungary.

Greece 1-0 correct score at 5.35*
