The build-up to the French Open is officially underway as all the top stars on the ATP Tour gather in the principality for the first of three Masters Series events on the red-dirt. With Roger Federer the only noticeable absentee this week, the big question is if anyone can stop Rafa Nadal from marching onto a 4th consecutive Monte Carlo Masters title and 12th in all? Novak Djokovic v Daniil Medvedev
The world number one came through another testing clash with Philipp Kohlschreiber to win 6-3 4-6 6-4 in his opening round in Monte-Carlo. It was the second set that was the most interesting as Djokovic boiled over in frustration and had his German opponent been more clinical with his 16 break point opportunities, we’d likely be without the top seed for the remainder of the tournament. However, testament to the Serb he battled his way through that match before cruising past Taylor Fritz with complete ease last time out. He’ll face Daniil Medvedev in his quarter-final, who has never previously reached this stage of a Masters event and we’re a little surprised to see him make it this far already off his favoured hard surface. His clay court figures prior to coming here had seen him lose nine of his 10 matches since the start of the 2017, with that only win coming against Marton Fucsovics at this tournament last year.
The Russian sailed past both Joao Sousa and Radu Albot in the opening two rounds, before a slightly more challenging encounter with Stefanos Tsitsipas saw him come through in three sets. That’s mightily impressive from him, but up against Djokovic we don’t give him much hope. The Serb has won 52 of his 59 matches since the start of Wimbledon, 33 of which were in straight sets, while on the red surface at Slams and Masters events alone, he’s won an outstanding 33 of his 41 matches since his 2016 Roland Garros win, with 24 being in straight sets.
