Lyon’s only hope of moving through to the next round of the Champions League is if they can find a way of keeping a red hot Lionel Messi quiet in their last 16, 1st leg clash. Lyon Unbeaten In The Group Stages
Lyon went unbeaten in the group stages having won their opening match at the Etihad before going onto draw each of their subsequent five matches.
They followed that up though with some superb form domestically, winning nine of their 14 matches as they even inflicted PSG’s first Ligue 1 defeat of the season earlier this month.
They will have to go to battle without their captain, Nabil Fekir, but they’re a decent W7-D1-L1 in his absence across all competitions this term.
Barcelona Hiccups On The Road
Barcelona won four of their six unbeaten matches in Group A and were the first team to qualify for the knockout stages such was their dominance.
They have been ruthless at the Nou Camp this season with 14 wins from their 20 matches in all competitions, but they’ve endured a few hiccups on the road.
Indeed, they’ve won just one of their last four in domestic competitions, losing Levante and Sevilla in the Copa del Rey, and although they may have been missing a few key players for those defeats, they certainly had their full squad out in their most recent visit to Athletic Bilbao which ended goalless.
Moreover, they have been vulnerable on the road in the knockout stages in recent years as they have lost four of their six such matches since 2015/16, with their solitary victory coming against a poor Arsenal side.
That run includes 4-0 and 3-0 first leg defeats at both PSG and Juventus and although Bruno Genesio’s chargers might not quite be at that level, they’ll still fancy their chances of taking a lead going into the second-leg.
Furthermore, when travelling to France in this competition, Spanish sides don’t fair too well either.
Lyon v Barcelona Betting Tips
They have gone W9-D9-L10 from their 28 matches since 2002/03, managing just two wins from their 10 such knockout games.
The last time these two met was at this stage 10 years ago and the first leg in France finished 1-1 and we wouldn’t be surprised to see a similar result.
Given the hosts have showcased their ability to beat the best on their day, we’re siding with them on the handicap.
