Frank Lampard will have to rally his troops when Derby travel to Elland Road to take on Leeds in their Championship play-off semi-final second leg. The Rams failed to take advantage of their home leg and find themselves 1-0 down with all to play for. Form Labs return with their betting preview and tips for the game while as ever we bring you plenty of value with our selection of enhanced odds which can be found in our FanBoosts section.
Derby Up Against It
Derby have it all to do after falling to defeat at home in the first leg, as no Championship side has ever made the final after that, though there’s always a time for a first and the 1-0 result hardly leaves them out of sight.
Having said that, the Rams would have felt the first leg was a real opportunity with Leeds ending the season poorly, while based on home results alone, Frank Lampard’s men would have finished just three points shy (46) of both Sheffield Utd and Norwich (49) this term.
Derby Road Form
On the road however, Derby have been pretty poor since the turn of the year as they’ve only gone W1-D5-L4 and failed to score in half of these games.
Although they were incensed not to receive a penalty at Pride Park with just quarter of an hour to play, it leaves them with the solitary strike in three head-to-head meetings versus Leeds this term, losing them by a combined score of 7-1.
In fact, the Rams failed to produce a shot on target on Saturday, and only managed six across their other two encounters this term, while each of Derby’s six defeats in 2019 have seen them draw a blank, with five of these finishing either 1-0 or 2-0.
Those head-to-head results and Derby’s away form clearly leave Leeds as massive favourites to complete the job at Elland Road. Indeed, Marcelo Bielsa’s charges have won 10 of their last 15 there, with two of the exceptions coming against promoted duo Norwich and Sheffield Utd, while one of the others came against a Villa side that had won their previous 10 outings.
Moreover, teams that have finished third in the table have a healthy record at home in the play-offs, winning seven of eight unbeaten matches against the visits of sixth-placed sides since 2010/11, with six of these coming by at least two clear goals. Given six of Leeds’ last seven victories have seen them produce a shutout, while Derby have struggled for goals on the road, we’ll have a little flutter on the correct score in addition to the straight win.
Leeds v Derby Betting Tips
The relationship between the two coaches is somewhat strained after the “Spygate” scandal earlier in the season, while referee Craig Pawson’s decision to overturn his initial awarding of a penalty for Derby in the first leg has only soured matters further.
Frank Lampard and his men were left fuming and this has the potential to be a hotly contested affair, so we’re also going to plump for bookings in this clash too.
The three head-to-head meetings yielded a total of 18 yellow cards, with each featuring a minimum of five, as Derby led the way with 12 bookings to Leeds’ six.
There might not have been any red cards, but we can only expect more commitment and desire in the tackle from these two.
In fact, only Nottingham Forest have picked up more yellow cards than Derby this term, while Leeds would be fifth in the table by that same measure.
