Sunderland are as short as 27/10 to win League One but they’d have to join Wolves (2013/14) and Sheffield Utd (2016/17) in becoming the only winning favourites this century. There have been three teams priced shorter than Sunderland in that time to top the division and they’ve ended up 2nd, 4th and 6th and so we’re inclined to leave the Black Cats alone at the prices, particularly as they’ve lost the likes of Khazri, McNair, Borini, Lens and Asoro, with their only expenditure being on centre back Jack Baldwin from Peterborough. The average price of League One Winners since 2005/06 is 16/1 and so we’re looking a little further down the list.
Portsmouth are the side that make most appeal at double-figure odds having missed out on the play-offs last term by five points as they ended up in 8th. Kenny Jackett remains in charge and he knows how to win this division having done so with Wolves back in 2013/14 after they’d suffered back-to-back relegations as his side accrued an impressive 103 points, whilst he also led Millwall to play-off victory back in 2010. They’ve made some shrewd additions, most notably defensive midfielder Tom Naylor from Burton to stiffen up the midfield, whilst forward Louis Dennis had a productive season for Bromley and so they look set for a bold challenge.
