Horse Racing: Newcastle & Newmarket – Thursday, June 4th

There is racing at Newcastle and Newmarket on Thursday as we start to look forward to this weekend's Guineas meeting.

Stefan Fellows

Thursday sees another two meetings as the build-up to the Guineas weekend begins with the first of four-days of racing at Newmarket.

The card starts with a total of six juvenile contests in which a few very smartly bred types will be looking to book their place at Royal Ascot.

Local trainer, Charlie Appleby, looks to have a strong hand from the Godolphin outfit while over at Newcastle we have another competitive 10 race card with the highlight being the 6f Group 3 contest at 3.55.

12 unraced fillies start the card of at Newmarket with some nice-looking types on paper, no doubt the market is likely to provide some clues. Time Scale particular catches the eye for trainer Ralph Beckett who has a decent record with his 2-year olds at the course.

The Charm Spirit filly is well related to multiple group and listed performers most notably Bletchley who herself was a winner on debut.

As mentioned, it could be a good day for the Charlie Appleby team and they look to have a strong fancy on paper here in the shape of Sky Angel.

The Dark Angel filly looks a nice type on breeding and has to be respected. Another nice sort looks to be the James Tate trained Risk Of Thunder, his trainer looks to have his horses well forward based on what we have seen so far this week and the Night Of Thunder filly makes more appeal at the likely odds.

Selection: Risk Of Thunder

Newmarket: 4.45

Mia Mento looks to have a solid chance of breaking her duck on the 3rd attempt for new connections. She has shown up well since coming across from Ireland in 2 similar handicaps to this at Newcastle. A mark of 85 looks workable back on turf based on last season’s best efforts.

Selection: Mia Mento

The Roger Teal trained Bear Force One looked to be an improving handicapper at the end of last season. He should have more to come this season but could be short enough for one who may progress during the season.

Mark Johnston is already firing in the winners and he runs 2 here with my preference for Deep Intrigue. He starts the season of a mark of 89 which based on last season final effort is one he can be more competitive from and having gone well fresh in the past previously he could be ready to strike first time up under proven conditions.

Selection: Deep Intrigue

Splinter looks to have been found a good opportunity to build upon on the promise shown on his only start at York last season. He looked in need of the experience that day before not having the clearest of runs looking the type who would do better with another winter under his belt.

It was soft ground that day and his sire Garswood has a decent record here at Newcastle suggesting the surface should be no problem.

Selection: Splinter (NAP)

The Charlie Hills trained Tilsit looks a really interesting type for his high-profile connections on debut here. The Lambourn based trainer does well with his runners he sends to the northern track operating at a 35% strike rate in the last year.

Ben Curtis is another positive as not only does he ride the course so well he also has a 38% strike rate for the yard. The First Defence Colt who should be fine on the surface is expected to have the measure of his main market rival Al Salt.

Selection: Tilsit

Improvement is expected from Rough Tide stepping into handicap company on the first occasion. The Acclamation gelding has shown promise on both starts to date and an opening mark of 68 looks workable on what we seen.

Selection: Rough Tide

Newcastle: 3:55
Betway Pavilion Stakes
Group 3 | Class 1 |  6f

A`Ali and Malotru are likely to be towards the head of the market for this Group 3 contest and both have to be respected. Dream Shot finished a length behind A`Ali in a group 2 at Doncaster last season but there is good reason to see a possible reversal of that form this time. The latter has to carry a 4lb penalty for that success which will make things tougher and he also seemed to have the run of the race that day.

The selection was a winner on debut at 2 suggesting he can go well first time out and trainer James Tate runners often run to form after a break with the Newmarket trainer boasting a 22% strike rate with his runners he sends to Newcastle adding further confidence.

Selection: Dream Shot (NB)

Newcastle: 5:05
Betyourway At Betway Handicap
Class 5 | 5f

The Richard Fahey trained Society Queen ran some solid races off higher marks than this last season to suggest she is more than capable of taking this lower grade event.

Back down to a mark of 75 now (1lb below his last winning mark) and dropping down to a class 5 event for the first time should be enough to see her finding the winners enclosure again.

Selection: Society Queen
