Unfortunately, the weather has resulted in the abandonment of the Welsh Grand National at Chepstow this afternoon.

But racing fans still have some high-class racing action to look forward to, including the return of top chaser Altior.

So here’s a look at the televised races taking place at Kempton on Sunday.

Kempton

Horse Racing

13.20 2m Ladbrokes Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) (GBB Race) (Class 1) (4yo+)

Shiskin was on of the top 2m novice hurdlers around last season and produced a good display of jumping when making a winning chase debut here in November.

Nicky Henderson has won this race with the likes of Sprinter Sacre, Simonsig and Altior in recent years so is clearly a race he targets for his best chasers.

Gumball looked to be going well enough still when falling 2 out at Cheltenham last time. The Phillip Hobbs runner is likely to make another bold bid from the front on this occasion and looks the main danger

Selection: Shiskin

13.55 3m½f (3m121y) (Winter) Play Ladbrokes 5-A-Side On Football Mares’ Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) (Class 2) (4yo+)

A good few of these mares arrive here in good heart in what looks a competitive event.

Top weight Perfect Myth rarely runs a bad race and was only just denied by a well handicapped horse at Wincanton on her latest start, she should go well once more if able to cope with this stiffer demand of stamina.

Bannixtown Glory was a course and distance winner here last time so will have no issues with conditions however the 12lb rise in the weights will make things tougher.

The progressive Emmpressive Lady stayed on well under heavy conditions and Sandown to suggest this step up in trip will be no problem.

She has another 5lb rise in the weights to content with today but looks open to improvement still and looks the one to beat from the market principals.

At bigger odds, though it’s worth taking a chance with Regarding Ruth, trainer Lucy Wadham has her string in good order currently and this mare wasn’t beaten far when third in a competitive handicap at Market Rasen and reproduction of that effort should put her in the mix once more

Selection: Regarding Ruth (Next Best)

Horse Racing Jumps

14.30 2m Ladbrokes Desert Orchid Chase (Grade 2) (GBB Race) (Class 1) (4yo+)

After swerving the Tingle Creek earlier in the month this looks a good opportunity for top-class chaser Altior to cement himself still as one of the best 2-mile chasers around.

Unbeaten here at Kempton including a victory in this race back in 2018 conditions look ideal this time around and despite having to give weight to his rivals is still some way clear on ratings.

Duc Des Genievres and Sceau Royal filled the places in this race last season but its Rouge Vif who is expected to be the main danger to the selection for me after his good run to finished third behind Politologue in the Tingle Creek.

Selection: Altior

15.05 3m Ladbrokes Committed To Safer Gambling Handicap Chase (Class 2) (4yo+ 0-145)

Royale Pagaille took a big step forward at Haydock last month but it could be that a couple of his rivals ran below their best that day and it will be interesting to see if the Ventia Williams trained runner can follow that run up here.

Manofthemountain found things to tough for him at Cheltenham on his latest start but looked progress prior to that with 2 good wins in handicaps and has to be respected for the inform Emma Lavelle team.

Du Nord showed improved form over fences to win at Newbury last time, that form has been franked with the second coming out to win at Wetherby yesterday but the 10lb rise makes things tougher.

With that in mind, it`s the third from that race Mellow Ben who is expected to reverse the form on these better terms this time.

Trainer Chris Gordan is in good form at the moment and Richard Johnson looks a good booking for this handy running type.

Selection: Mellow Ben (NAP)
