Arsenal’s Unbeaten Run Ended
Arsenal will be desperate to get back on track after their 22-game unbeaten streak came to an end rather surprisingly at Southampton. However, Spurs will also see this as an opportunity to claim a first trophy under Mauricio Pochettino, with their appearance in the final of this tournament back in 2015 the closest they’ve come to landing silverware under the Argentine.
These two sides were certainly committed as they played out a six-goal thriller at the start of the month, though that was an unusually high-scoring affair compared to recent head-to-heads, and with a place in the semis at stake, we’d expect a tad more caution this time around.

Nine of the previous 12 encounters between these two sides saw fewer than three goals across all competitions, including all six at the Emirates as Arsenal won three while the others finished 1-1. In fact, in the aftermath of their 4-2 victory, Arsenal are now unbeaten hosting their North London rivals since 2011/12 (W6-D3-L0), though it’s noticeable that each of those stalemates have come within the past four seasons.
Indeed, the gap between these two teams has shrunk to the point where the difference is almost negligible, with Spurs overcoming their inferiority complex as they’ve finished above the Gunners in each of the past two campaigns – while they’ve opened up a five point lead in the league over Arsenal since they last met.
Both Sides Have Defensive Problems
Although we’re not expecting so much final-third action this time around, both sides have issues at the back and so we’re somewhat deterred by the goals market. Arsenal are most likely to be without centre-back Shkodran Mustafi as well as full-backs Sead Kolasinac and Hector Bellerin while Rob Holding is out until next season.
Meanwhile, Spurs have just lost defensive shield Eric Dier, while centre-backs Juan Foyth and Davinson Sanchez are absent with Jan Vertonghen a serious doubt. A depleted defence for both sides leaves us eyeing up Harry Kane at odds-against.
The England captain holds a phenomenal record in this fixture, with eight goals in as many league encounters and even if he’s used off the bench, he’ll fancy his chances here.
