Decade of Decline? Picking the positives from a difficult 10 years at Ibrox

Since 2010 Rangers have gone into liquidation and been relegated to the Third Division, before climbing back up to where they belong, Steve Allison recalls some of the highs and lows of the past 10 years.

Steve Allison

Player of the Decade

Alfredo Morelos. He’s consistently the team’s top goalscorer and has continued improving on and off the park.

His European record is amazing not to mention a great mix of pace, power, aggression and goal-scoring ability.

Game of the Decade

Rangers vs Celtic Hampden April 2016 in the Scottish Cup Semi-Final. Rangers won penalties after 2-2 draw. We were still playing in the Championship at the time and no one had given us any chance going into the game.

Goal of the Decade

That would be Barry Mckay’s against Celtic in the Scottish Cup Semi-Final in the same game. An absolute screamer and in such a big game too. They don’t come much better than that!

Biggest disappointment of the Decade

Obviously, the financial difficulties which saw the club placed in the bottom division had a huge effect on the decade.

As for on-field matters; losing to Celtic 5-1 at Ibrox in April 2017 was the biggest disappointment. It really doesn’t get any more painful that.

Best memory of the Decade

Partying for 7+ hours after the semi-final win over Celtic. Though how much of it those of us who were there remember about it is up for debate!

Most underrated signing of the Decade

That would be James Tavernier. He is consistently criticised for his defending ability which I don’t think is actually as bad as is made out.

He has made a few costly errors and has built-up something of a reputation for himself, but he is Rangers captain and has been a key player for the club for four years now.

Best team of the Decade

It has to be this season’s team by a country mile. Steven Gerrard has built a great side that will push Celtic all the way for the first time in years.

What are your hopes for the next 10 years and where do you think your club will be in 2030?

To get back to winning titles and cups regularly is a must and by 2030 competing each season in the Champions League group stage and still keep our place as the most successful team in the world.
