Atalanta Having A Great Season
It could be a memorable season for Atalanta as they hone in on a Champions League slot and have the chance to lift silverware here in their first Coppa Italia final since they finished runners-up in 1995/96.
Lazio are more accustomed to success and have won this tournament five times since then, with this their fourth appearance at the showpiece event in seven years.
However, we wouldn’t pay too much attention to historical success or failure as Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini is virtually a shoe-in for coach of the season and has his team on a real roll at present.
Atalanta are unbeaten in 13 outings (W9-D4), as they’re currently on a five-game winning streak that’s included victories away at both Napoli and Lazio themselves.
In fact, that latter result came in their last road trip and that will hand them confidence with this game taking place at Lazio’s home ground, the Stadio Olimpico, while they also won the reverse fixture in Bergamo back in December.
Both teams have found the net in five of six head-to-head meetings since 2016/17 under current management, with Simone Inzaghi and Gasperini taking over the reins of the two clubs during the same summer.
Half of these encounters featured at least four goals, so we certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see another entertaining clash given the approach of these two managers, with the attractive football and results achieved by Gasperini seeing him heavily linked with the Milan job, as Gennaro Gattuso continues to struggle to live up to expectations for the Rossoneri.
However, 17 of 25 Coppa Italia finals since 1993/94 have seen fewer than three goals over the 90 minutes, and so we’d prefer to opt for the simple win rather than overcomplicating things.
Gomez, Masiello And Mancini Back For Atalanta
Papu Gomez, Andrea Masiello and Gianluca Mancini were all suspended in Atalanta’s 2-1 victory over Genoa on the weekend, but Gasperini can call upon that trio again here and the rest will likely have done Gomez in particular some good.
The 31-year-old captain is enjoying a productive season and leads the clubs’ assists chart with 13 to his name, while he’s also hit double figures for goals.
His presence and experience should help provide further opportunities for top scorer Duvan Zapata, who netted in both head-to-heads this season and has 27 goals for the campaign to date, with his 22 league goals leaving him in second place for the Capocannoniere.
The Colombian hasn’t just plundered goals against the weaker outfits however and in Serie A and the Coppa Italia combined, he’s netted 11 times in as many appearances versus top-half teams since the start of December.
Coppa Italia Final Betting Tips
Lazio are only W4-D1-L4 since the start of April and in addition to that recent defeat by Atalanta, they’ve also suffered a loss hosting Chievo and only rescued a stalemate when Sassuolo came to town with a stoppage-time strike over this period.
Atalanta have been far more consistent of the two sides, particularly with regards to recent form, and can lift only their second Coppa Italia title on Wednesday night.
