Best Of The Championship Final Day

The title and play-off places will be decided...

Football Whispers

Automatic promotion and relegation might have already been decided in the Championship, but there are still key things still to be decided on the league’s final day.

The title could still head to Sheffield United if they win and Norwich lose, the gap between them at three points. And, not far further down the table, Derby, Middlesbrough, and Bristol City could all end up in the final play-off place.

All five teams play a different opponent on Sunday, with four of them away from home, and we’ve previewed all five matches here.

Aston Villa vs Norwich

Having wrapped up automatic promotion last weekend, they could secure the title this time out. Given that they have a worse goal difference than Sheffield United, they need to avoid a defeat to Aston Villa, who are assured of fifth regardless of results.

The good news for Norwich is that they haven’t lost since mid-February. A wobble of sorts delayed the mathematical certainty of their Premier League status next season, but even that small wobble was only four draws in a row.

Coincidentally, though, the last time Norwich lost was also the day that Villa were last defeated. In the meantime, Dean Smith’s side have won ten out of twelve. Could they spoil the Canaries’ party with another?

Stoke City vs Sheffield United

Not too far away, in Stoke, Sheffield United will be hoping that things go their way. Chris Wilder’s side are another who have been on an incredible run, only losing once since mid-January.

Stoke, on the other hand, haven’t won in their last five. They sit in 16th, and the furthest that they can either rise or fall is a step down to 17th.

The Potters managed to hold Sheffield United to a draw the first time the pair met, although that was before the Blades turned their season around. They’ve scored seven goals and conceded none in the last three games.

Put simply, United are the most in-form side in the Championship and Stoke have nothing to play for.

Derby vs West Bromwich Albion

As the current holders of sixth-place and the only challenger for it ending their season at home, Derby are in the driving seat.

Unfortunately for them, West Bromwich Albion are still in with a chance of making third-place, and with it a more favourable draw in the play-offs. Both have won three of their past five, but when the Baggies are away from home they’ve fared less well. They haven’t won on their last three road trips and they’ve lost three of their last five.

Derby also have the history of the reverse fixture on their side, when they rolled over their fellow Midlands team 4-1. Could they do the same again this weekend to secure sixth-place?

Rotherham United vs Middlesbrough

Rotherham are already relegated and just have pride in front of their own fans to play for. Middlesbrough are a point behind Derby, and will know that they will rue their recent six-game losing streak if they miss out on the play-offs this narrowly.

While it’s out of Tony Pulis’ team’s hands, Boro have won four of their last five games and so are in good form at the moment.

Only three teams in the league have scored fewer goals than Boro this season (even relegated Rotherham have more) so don’t expect many to go in, but if Middlesbrough go ahead then Tony Pulis is a man who knows how to defend a lead.

Fan Boost: Jordan Hugill to score, Middlesbrough to win & both teams to score

Hull City vs Bristol City

With two teams above them and two points of ground to make up in the table, Bristol City only have an outside chance of making the play-offs.

They’re also not in particularly good form, having only won one of their last five games. In fact, since mid-February the Robins have only won four of 14 in the league.

Hull, though, have just had a run of fixtures playing other teams in and around the play-offs, and lost all three against Middlesbrough, West Bromwich Albion, and Sheffield United. Currently in 13th, they could sneak into the top half, but primarily just have pride in front of their home fans at stake.

Finishing sixth might be unlikely for Bristol City, but they’ll kick themselves if it turned out to be possible and they spurned their chance in this match.
